As anyone who has struggled with the
on and off hassle of readers knows, having the ability to focus on the
details of life is priceless. Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay improves
near and intermediate vision by simply reshaping the front part of the
eye. Fichte Endl & Elmer Eyecare is the first to offer the brand new,
FDA-approved Raindrop Corneal Inlay procedure in the Northeast. This highly
anticipated implantable Raindrop device improves near vision for patients,
specifically those with the common age-related vision problem, Presbyopia.
The Inlay improves near vision and can potentially reduce the dependency
on reading glasses. If you are constantly buying and stashing reading
glasses everywhere imaginable, this procedure may be perfect for you.
Best Candidates for
the Raindrop Inlay
If you wear reading glasses to compensate for a loss of near vision, you
may benefit from a Raindrop® near vision inlay. The best candidates
are people who are experiencing near vision difficulties from Presbyopia.
Presbyopia is caused by the steady decline of the ability to control focusing
power of your eyes. This occurs in almost all adults with natural aging,
starting near the age of 40. The FDA states, This procedure is indicated
for use in patients 41 to 65 years old who, in addition to not having
had cataract surgery, are unable to focus clearly on near objects or small
print and need reading glasses with +1.50 to +2.50 diopters of power
but do not need glasses or contacts for clear distance vision.
How the Raindrop Inlay works
Recently featured on the Today Show, the Raindrop inlay device is smaller
than the size of a pinhead, at 32 micrometers thick and 2mm in diameter.
This tiny, transparent inlay about the size of a pinhead and thinner
than a piece of paper is placed just beneath the surface of your
eye to reshape your cornea and improve your ability to read, use your
phone or work with small objects. A long-term solution, it is implanted
in only one of your eyes to improve near vision.
"Unlike some options that require
both eyes to be treated, Raindrop is only preformed on one eye,
Kevin Obrien, Marketing Director, Fichte Endl Elmer Eyecare
The device is fittingly called the Raindrop because it is made up entirely
of a clear, hydrogel material and looks much like a small water droplet.
The Raindrop device is transplanted just behind the cornea layer, which
is the clear, front surface of the eye. The implant reshapes the curvature
of the cornea to help provide a stronger surface for the eye to better
focus on near objects.
Results of the procedure
The procedure, similarly to LASIK, requires only a 10-minute outpatient
procedure. Raindrop is done in the office and, thanks to numbing eye drops,
patients experience no discomfort. You can return to normal activities
and expect to see noticeable improvement in your near vision within the
first week. Most patients who have had Raindrop gain five lines of near
vision on an eye chart without the need for reading glasses within one
week and their vision continues to improve for several weeks. In fact,
the two-year FDA study resulted with 95% of patients that had 20/40 vision
or better at near distances with the implant takes only about 10 minutes
to complete with a quick recovery. Afterward, both of your eyes will work
together to give you a clearer picture of both near and far objects.

About Fichte Endl Elmer Eyecare
Our Eye Doctors
Our founding partner, Dr. Fichte is regarded as one of the countrys
leading surgeons in both cataract and refractive surgery. As a clinical
investigator, he has been instrumental in the introduction of many new
and improved techniques in ophthalmology including the new multifocal
intraocular lens implant, a no-stitch surgical technique and
the use of laser to correct eye problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness
Dr. Michael Endl, a native of Western New York and Head of Ophthalmology
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, has been at the forefront of ophthalmologys
technological advances through his career as a researcher, speaker, and
educator. Recently he was given the Top Doc award for the
sixth consecutive year as voted by his peers.
Also, born and raised right here in Western New York, Dr. Thomas Elmers
extensive experience and training in cataract, Lasik, glaucoma and laser
surgeries, as well as his specialized pediatric training, allows us to
further expand our total eye care services.
A fourth Ophthalmologist recently joined the practice. Richelle Stillwagon,
M.D., a general ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of cataracts,
glaucoma, general eyelid disorders, and routine eye care for patients
with diabetes, is now seeing patients and performing surgery at both offices.
Our team is rounded out by equally talented and skilled optometrists offering
a full range of eye care services, including: Laser vision correction,
Corneal Surgeries, Glaucoma Surgeries, Innovative Cataract Procedures,
Cosmetic Eyelid Procedures, Childrens Eyecare, Dry Eye, and Senior
Eyecare. Eyecare is especially important for seniors. One in three Americans
will develop some type of eye disease that can threaten their vision by
the time they are 65. Its easy to dismiss failing eyesight as simply
getting older. Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, have no
early warning signs and, in early stages, can only be detected through
tests performed by your eye doctor. If you are a senior, you can preserve
your sight by having annual eye exams and treating any eye disease as
early as possible.
